Because applications have fallen sharply in recent months, there is little demand for new housing for refugees. Some reserve accommodations are even empty. The building on Lunzerstrasse in Linz, which was the target of an arson attack last year, is now in use.
At the end of last year, all eyes were on the refugee shelter in Steyregg. More than 90 fire and police operations culminated in firefighting operations in which female members of the volunteer fire brigade were harassed. As a result, 14 troublemakers were relocated and the population was halved.
Quick effect
This step had an effect: since then there has been only one false alarm. “I am currently not aware of any problems,” confirms Thomas Fussenegger, spokesperson for the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU).
Fewer applications
Because the number of asylum applications has decreased significantly compared to the previous year, some accommodations are empty or abandoned: for example, the quarters planned as reserves on Unionstrasse in Linz or the former Ibis Hotel.
Lunzerstrasse and Steinerkirchen in operation
The district on Lunzerstrasse in Linz, where an arson took place in 2023, is now in use. “The occupancy rate fluctuates between 70 and 90 percent,” says a spokesperson for the Samaritan Association. There is also news from the old workers’ house in the center of Steinerkirchen/Traun: according to Mayor Thomas Steinerberger, two refugee families have now come to live there.
