New York state, which already has one of the country’s strictest gun laws, is looking to tighten gun laws after a series of deadly gun attacks. Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, who has yet to sign the bill, has already given her approval.
The Democrat-dominated Senate passed a law in Albany on Thursday that, among other things, raises the minimum age for buying semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21 and makes it significantly more difficult to buy body armor.
According to US media reports, the state in the northeast of the country of about 20 million would be the first to legally respond to the recent series of deadly firearms attacks.
In recent weeks there has been a disaster at a Texas elementary school that killed 19 children and two teachers. A gunman armed with an assault rifle shot ten people dead in a Buffalo supermarket, and a 45-year-old man shot four people and himself in an Oklahoma hospital.
