Ukraine has attacked a Russian drone factory far behind the front line. According to Russian information, two drones exploded in the city of Yelabuga in the Republic of Tatarstan on Tuesday. The Ukrainian side said they had caused “significant damage.” Videos online showed violent explosions.
Images circulating online show people throwing themselves to the ground during the explosions. Local authorities said the drones landed near a student dormitory. According to Ukrainian information, Iranian Shahed combat drones are produced in a special economic zone in Yelabuga. Students from a technical college work in this factory.
Refinery hit by drone
The oil refinery in the nearby city of Nizhnekamsk – almost 1,300 kilometers behind the front line – was also the target of a Ukrainian drone strike. Ukraine said one of Russia’s largest refineries had been attacked. Russia confirmed the attack. At least seven people were injured, according to emergency services.
But there was no serious damage and the “technological process” of the companies was not disrupted, Rustam Minnikhanov, head of the Republic of Tatarstan, said on his Telegram channel mi
Nizhnekamsk is home to large oil processing plants of the regional oil company Tatneft. Video footage of the attack on the refinery, reviewed by Reuters, indicates that part of the Taneco refinery, owned by Tatneft, was hit. It is one of the largest in the country and can produce 340,000 barrels of fuel per day. The part hit is responsible for about half of the production.
The ruble drops after an attack
To defend against Russia’s war of aggression, Ukraine has been systematically attacking Russian oil refineries with long-range combat drones for weeks. The Republic of Tatarstan is highly industrialized and located approximately 1000 kilometers southeast of Moscow. It is unusual for Ukraine to attack and hit targets at such great distances. This also affected the Russian currency: the ruble fell against the dollar after news of the attack.
Russia, for its part, has attacked the country’s energy infrastructure overnight, according to Ukraine. Ukraine’s Southern Military Command said the drone strikes targeted the Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovohrad regions. There was an impact in Kirovohrad. Details were initially unknown. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s General Staff says nine out of 10 Russian drone attacks were repulsed that night.
