Large parts of Thailand are currently experiencing an extreme heat wave. Temperatures of more than 40 degrees in the shade have been measured for days, especially in the northern and central regions. Even at night the temperature hardly falls below 30 degrees.
People were specifically asked to stay in cooled indoor areas between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. “The Ministry of Health urges the public to stay at home and avoid outdoor activities due to the risk of heat stroke,” the Pattaya Mail newspaper wrote on Wednesday.
On the streets, countless people sought shelter from the sun’s rays under parasols. Others relied on mini fans and fans. In some tourist hotspots, such as the temple complexes in the former capital Ayutthaya, visitors were equipped with special UV umbrellas that provide special protection.
Summer since February
It has been unusually warm in many parts of Thailand since March. The weather bureau warned that temperatures this summer, which started in Thailand at the end of February, could be up to two degrees higher than normal. The observed temperature can sometimes exceed the dreaded 50 degree mark (see video above). Countries in Southeast Asia in particular are experiencing increasingly longer heat waves.
