Imperial Eagle “Artemisia” had flown from Greece to France and back to Zurndorf in Burgenland. There ended the record flight of the proud bird. The police have already launched an investigation.
According to the bird protection organization “BirdLife”, the eagle was found with bullet wounds in a hunting area in Zurndorf in early May. Birdlife activist Matthias Schmidt dismayed: “Our protégé was shot in cold blood by a poacher.”
Bird apparently hit while sitting
Employees of the Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel National Park brought “Artemisia” to the Haringsee owl and bird of prey reserve. The investigation there showed that the bird had clearly been shot while sitting.
“Both legs were badly injured. Open fractures and high blood loss resulted. There was no other option than to put the imperial eagle lady to sleep,” says Schmidt.
Poachers make bird area unsafe
According to “BirdLife”, there have been several illegal incidents around Zurndorf in the past: the shooting of a marsh harrier, a buzzard and setting up illegal traps have already been reported.
The police have also taken action and are investigating. However, no perpetrators have been identified so far.
