According to Kiev Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko, Russia’s war against Ukraine is aimed at erasing the country’s identity. During the first 100 days of the invasion, Russia destroyed 370 cultural sites. Cultural monuments, especially churches, but also exhibits were damaged.
“Culture is identity,” said the minister. That is why Russia is trying to destroy the identity-building Ukrainian culture. Ukraine has a great culture and will promote it more internationally as well.
“We can replace the Russian culture, which Moscow sees as a weapon, abroad and everywhere with our own culture,” Tkachenko said.
Many artists and cultural professionals are active on the cultural front. The residents of the German capital could have seen this themselves during a recent concert at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The band Kalush Orchestra, which won the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin that year, also performed there.
Tkachenko confirms plans to host the ESC in Ukraine next year – despite the unforeseen end of the war. The conditions for a music festival in times of war have yet to be clarified, he said. But it has to take place in the Siegerland.
