Discovered in a tree – stolen zoo monkey reappeared in Leipzig

Date:

After the strange theft of a female monkey from the Leipzig Zoo, ‘Ruma’ resurfaced: a jogger discovered the bearded monkey in a tree. The thieves probably left the rare animal behind after reporting on the case.

After the monkey was spotted, the police were alerted; a team from Leipzig Zoo also responded. Meanwhile, the primate had holed up in a nearby apartment building and was captured there.

Monkey good, but weakened
“Ruma” should be good. “We are relieved that our female bearded monkey is doing well after an initial check,” said zoo director Jörg Junhold. The monkey shows no external injuries, but appears weakened. He expressed his gratitude to the informant who spotted the animal while jogging in the morning.

The case is not over yet: according to the police, the search for the perpetrators continues. An investigation is underway for particularly serious theft.

The animal’s disappearance was noticed on the morning of Easter Sunday – there were clear signs of forced entry into the enclosure, the zoo said. Another animal, a twelve-year-old male, was left in the complex by the perpetrators.
