On Thursday morning (local time), a ferry to the popular Thai holiday island of Koh Tao caught fire (see video above). According to reports, the fire broke out in the engine room, several kilometers from the pier. There were about 100 people on board at the time.
Some of them had suffered light smoke inhalation. Several of the 97 passengers jumped into the sea and were rescued by boats that arrived on the scene. Photos and videos showed the ship on fire. The ferry, which also had a crew of 11, was en route from Surat Thani on the mainland to Koh Tao at the time of the fire.
Many tourists on board
Koh Tao is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Gulf of Thailand. It is particularly busy between March and June, because whale sharks often pass by in the sea. There were also many foreigners on board the ferry. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there were no people from Austria among them.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
