A defective rocket launcher on a Danish warship forced the closure of air and shipping traffic in the Great Belt, a strait between the Danish islands of Funen and Zeeland, on Thursday.
The national maritime authority warned of falling rocket debris and called on ships not to sail through the area and to anchor if necessary. The Danish military said the problem with the rocket launcher arose during a mandatory test.
Naval exercises are taking place in the area
The launch vehicle was activated and subsequently could not be deactivated. “Until the missile launch pad is deactivated, there is a risk that the missile could be fired and continue to travel for several kilometers,” the statement said. A naval maneuver was currently underway in the region.
The warning affected an area about four kilometers south of the Great Belt Bridge, which crosses the strait and is one of the largest in the world. The operator said the bridge would remain open to traffic.
About half of the shipping traffic between the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat – the connection to the North Sea – goes via the Great Belt. The ferry lines between Kiel and Oslo and Gothenburg also run here.
