Trial in Innsbruck – television broken, man had to fear for his life

Date:

A 30-year-old Iraqi is said to have suddenly appeared on the doorstep of a former friend in Tyrol, armed with a hammer, and ended up destroying a television. The man was now on trial in Innsbruck.

Pretty much best friends. That was probably once. The two Iraqis, who met in a refugee shelter in Tyrol in 2016, visited a gym together and went for a walk.

Sister and mother offended
That suddenly changed in the autumn of 2023. “We had a heated discussion on the phone and then had no more contact,” the suspect said at the hearing. The reason for the dispute remained unclear. “At one point he insulted my sister and my mother,” he explained. It also remained a mystery whether the 30-year-old had actually committed the crime: “I was in the city that day and then at home.”

Head and chest protected with forearm
However, the alleged victim described: “He stood at my door, first knocked violently and then damaged the peephole and the door with a hammer.” He then destroyed his television before finally hitting it with the hammer. Fortunately, he was able to avoid blows to the head or chest with his forearm.

It cannot be determined whether the man was actually at the crime scene at the time of the crime. A bus driver was only “80 percent certain”, a witness stayed away without an excuse – hence the postponement to April 17.
