In Hall in Tirol, a duck recently got stuck in a chimney, fell down and got stuck in a stove. Employees of the animal shelter rescued the animal and cared for it, so that it became healthy and beautiful again. Now the duck is back to splashing around in his usual pond.
Only she knows how the originally beautiful white mandarin duck ended up in the chimney of the two-storey house in Hall. Last week the animal even fell two stories down the chimney pipe. The last stop was an old wood stove, the kind that used to be mainly used for cooking.
Duck hid in the stove
Luckily nothing was cooked on it, not even the “chimney duck”. In return, the completely astonished residents of the house offered the animal several ways to get out of the stove. But the duck stayed in the oven out of fear.
That’s why they contacted the Mentlberg animal shelter. Nadine Eberharter and Romana Rampl immediately went to Hall, to the “Kamin-Duck”. By joining forces we managed to get the bird out of its dungeon. “The duck was completely black with soot, but fortunately unharmed,” Eberharter remembers.
Baths for cleansing and beauty
At the game station in Mentlberg, a cleansing bath was part of the rehabilitation program for the mandarin duck. “The ducks groom themselves, especially when they are in the water. “But that would have been too dangerous, because the animal would have swallowed too much soot,” said the zookeeper. The duck was initially not allowed into the enclosure, but spent a night in quarantine.
After the first bath, a bit of white flashed through the soot feathers again. In total, the zookeepers washed the crash pilot four times with a special product. Eberharter: “She had some difficulty with it, but it went well.” The supposedly ugly duckling became a white beauty again within a few days. “We didn’t think the plumage would recover so quickly.”

Two days ago, residents collected the duck and released it into the wild at a pond in Hall, where the animal probably lived. Maybe she will soon find a partner to mate with. After this beauty treatment, the chances seem greater than ever.
