An ex-Wagner mercenary and veterinarian from St. Petersburg who was pardoned after serving in the war, traverses Russian penal colonies and uses scandalous statements to “advertise” a deployment to the front. “You can pull out the corpses’ gold teeth and take their gold chains with you. You can steal and take it all home. “The Russian Ministry of Defense will protect you from questions from the Ministry of Internal Affairs,” he says bluntly.
Russian journalists are reminded of Dmitri Karavaychik and the drug-cooking high school teacher Walter White from the popular television series ‘Breaking Bad’. It was a ‘hobby’ and additional income – namely making amphetamines – that landed vet Dmitri in the gulag. In the dark prison he was recruited to serve at the front and after six months of murder and bloodshed in Ukraine he was a free man again. And a hero in Russia.
Today, Dmitri walks with his head held high and with medals on his chest through prison camps – he is looking for Prigozhin-like “supplies” for the front, as one prisoner revealed to the American broadcaster “Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty”.
“Scumbags can become famous”
There was real recruitment in the prison where everyone had to show up, the prisoner says. Dmitri Karavaychik stood proudly on a pedestal, next to him stood an officer who kept nodding his head.
They (the prisoners, please note) no longer need anyone and can no longer hope for anything good, Dmitri said. But in the war, real bastards and complete losers could become famous, he said bluntly, boasting that Kiev had put a bounty of 250 million rubles on his head. Conveniently, he was even allowed to take home a machine gun, Dmitri says.
Dmitri Karavaychik can be seen here:
War sold as a ‘great opportunity’.
“Go forward and let it rip. Tear out the golden teeth of the corpses; you can also take their gold chains. You can steal and take everything home, he tried to convince the desperate men. “The war is your great opportunity,” he continued, like a motivational speaker. “You can steal, kill, do whatever you want and get rich. You may never return home. But you will definitely have a lot of fun,” shocked Dmitri with his unscrupulous character. The prisoner admitted that things were not going well for the prisoners either. Only one person signed up to serve at the front.
No more grace
In February last year, the now deceased mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was deprived of the opportunity to recruit soldiers for the front in prison. Since then, the Russian Ministry of Defense has been at the helm. This only changed things for the worse for the prisoners. Instead of a pardon after six months in Ukraine, the contracts are now indefinite – officially you have to serve until the fighting is over. Since then, their prison sentence has no longer been lifted, but the remaining time has simply been placed on probation. There can no longer be any question of voluntary efforts; the prisoners are now sent to destruction under pressure and coercion.
