The difficult fate of a 59-year-old woman concerns the legal system in Carinthia: because she suffers from dementia, needs to be cared for in a home – and is now alone. The man is not allowed to visit him due to domestic violence and criminal proceedings are underway against the son. The academic is said to have sexually abused his own mother.
“When her son came to visit, she didn’t seem happy afterwards,” says an employee of a nursing home in Carinthia. There were repeated conflicts with the 39-year-old, an academic, – mainly because of the very close contact between the 59-year-old dementia patient and the Bosnian-born man. “He lay in bed with her, cuddling, kissing and caressing her, playing her love songs, she couldn’t defend herself much – I think that’s just not appropriate!”
“Feeling the breasts and genitals”
Other colleagues in the home also observed the tenderness, the intensity of which is said to have culminated in what prosecutor Ines Küttler accuses of sexual abuse of a defenseless person: “French kisses, groping of breasts and genitals. There is no doubt about that based on the witnesses!” The suspect himself naturally describes everything differently: “I love my mother, I cared for her at home for eight years before it was no longer possible and she had to go to a home. I played old songs for her to remember, but I would never touch her inappropriately, that would be incest!
Mother is not suitable to be interviewed
He considers himself completely unfairly accused because he continuously exposed shortcomings in care at home. And he also resisted helpers who took his mother to the chapel. “She is Serbian Orthodox, that is not her faith.” No one can ask what the woman still believes today: she suffers from a severe form of Alzheimer’s dementia, cannot be interviewed and now has to live in the house without her family. Because the son is suspected of abuse, the husband is not allowed to visit due to domestic violence. This is one of the reasons why judge Gernot Kugi meticulously searches for the truth. More witnesses will be needed soon. The trial has been postponed for the time being.
