Blockade stopped – climate protest: Thunberg arrested twice

Date:

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was temporarily arrested twice by police during roadblocks in The Hague.

On Saturday, Thunberg initially took part with around a hundred demonstrators in an attempt by the group Extinction Rebellion (XR) to once again block a highway in the center of the Dutch city, the Dutch news agency ANP reported.

As police kept protesters off the highway, they blocked another nearby road. Thunberg and other activists were arrested there and taken away by bus.

Thunberg: “Arrest was peaceful”
The climate activist told the news agency by telephone that her arrest was peaceful. “But that’s not what it’s about, I’m here because of the climate goal.”

She felt that she could convey her message well in The Hague. “People have been promised action for decades. Just nothing happens. We’ll see if it works now.”

Thunberg: New block after release
After police released Thunberg, she returned to the center of The Hague and took part in another blockade, after which officers temporarily re-arrested her there.

The group Extinction Rebellion attempted on Saturday to block the A12 highway through the center of The Hague for the 37th time since the start of the protests last year.

The activists want the Netherlands to abolish all government subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
