Experts want to restore the old city of Palmyra

Palmyra is a famous symbol of Syria. But the cultural center was hit hard by the age of 14 years of war. Experts hope that the destination could again attract visitors internationally after a restoration. Local tourists took the opportunity to visit the fascinating destination.

Visited before the civil war of 150,000 tourists/month
Palmyra is one of the six UNESCO world heritage sites in Syria. The city was once an important hub on the Silk Road And combined the Roman and pearlity with Asia. The cultural center has partly 2000 -year ruins from Roman times. Before the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, Palmyra was the most popular tourist destination in the country and registered around 150,000 visitors a month.

In the recent past, a prison was housed there, in which thousands of political prisoners, including opponents of the Assad regime, were tortured. When the Terrorist Militia Islamic State has control over the city, many well -known monuments were damaged. For example, temples or a triumphal arch were destroyed because supporters considered these buildings to be symbols of idols.

The researcher and expert Ayman Nabu was one of the first to attend Palmyra after the fall of the Assad regime. “The Palmyra Museum was in a regrettable state, documents and artifacts were missing no idea what happened to it,” the scientist complains. He reports on looting and many illegal excavations that the cultural center had suffered.
