A special fraudster ended up on the docks in Klagenfurt. The entrepreneur bought real estate in Carinthia for more than 1.3 million euros, put his furniture in it and lived comfortably – but never paid a cent. He now has an address behind bars for the foreseeable future; further investigations are still ongoing.
Even lawyer Mario Hopf has no understanding for his client: ‘That you don’t understand!’ he complains as the 58-year-old defendant tries to explain that he is a fraud, but somehow fails. He had hoped for millions in loans from a dubious Irish-African company and probably wanted to treat himself in advance.
What happened? The fabric retailer, which claims to have large sales in the fashion industry and a monthly salary of 5,200 euros, is apparently actually bankrupt, the court has investigated. Yet last summer he responded to real estate advertisements in Carinthia, where first a beautiful villa and then an equally striking condominium in the Spittal region were sold.
According to the complaint, the man bought both through a sales contract – and without paying a cent. “You even managed to get the keys and move in,” asks judge Michaela Sanin. “What did the brokers check?”
Three years partial prison sentence
But as the air became increasingly thin, the residential nomad went into hiding, ending up in custody. “A misunderstanding,” he says. “I could have explained everything.” He still has time for that, because his new address is currently Klagenfurt prison: three years in prison, one of which is unconditional. The punishment is not yet final.
