40,000 copies – Brezina wrote a book for children in Burgenland

Date:

Well-known children’s book author Thomas Brezina has written his own book for Burgenland students to get them excited about reading. He personally handed over the first copies.

Who doesn’t know him? Thomas Brezina is one of the most successful children’s and young adult authors. As part of the ‘Reading-Writing-Understanding’ project launched by the Department of Education last year, the writer wrote his own book for Burgenland students to spark their enthusiasm for reading.

Approximately 40,000 copies will be distributed
Now, together with State Education Councilor Daniela Winkler, the first copies of “The Flying Castle” have been distributed to the children of the Weiden am See primary school. In the coming weeks, other primary schools, kindergartens and special schools will also receive the books. A maximum of 40,000 books must be distributed by the 2027/2028 school year.

Reading as an adventure
“For me, the biggest concern is to inspire children, to show them what is happening around them. Reading should be an adventure in which you can immerse yourself,” says Brezina. “The Flying Castle” is set in Burgenland and consists of three parts that build on each other and are aimed at different age groups.

Animals and castles
It is about five special animals that live in a castle and are not accepted by the others. The books are interactive, readers can become part of the story.

From the last year of kindergarten
“I am happy that we were able to convince Thomas to be part of a national, sustainable reading initiative and to write his own book for the children of Burgenland,” explains the regional councilor. She is convinced of the positive effect of reading aloud. “We therefore decided to start with preschoolers and extend the project to children in the last compulsory year of kindergarten,” says Winkler.

All parts in series
Children entering their final year of kindergarten this year and next will receive all three books in a series. In the coming weeks, preschoolers, primary school students and ASO students will each receive the corresponding book as a gift, as will the teachers who work in these groups and classes.
