A rubber boat with more than 20 migrants on board ran aground two days ago on an impassable cliff in the northeast of the island of Chios. Three children are said to have died in the accident, Greek media report.
Only on Wednesday did several survivors manage to overcome the rocks and get help – since then the coast guard and fire brigade have been on duty to rescue the people, broadcaster ERT reported.
Dehydrated
Sixteen people were brought to safety from the rocks, but three girls aged four, seven and ten were said to have survived the accident. The people were completely dehydrated, an emergency worker on the scene said. It is still unclear exactly when the accident occurred and whether the three children died due to lack of water or other circumstances.
It was also initially uncertain whether there were any other survivors or victims. The dead are believed to be three of the five siblings who were on board with their mother. The mother, a 30-day-old baby and another child are believed to have survived.
The passengers included a total of eight children, it was said. The people said they came from Afghanistan and had left from Turkey’s west coast, Greek media reported.
