Russian forces attacked with more than 40 missiles and more than 40 drones on Thursday evening, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The target was critical infrastructure, Zelensky explained.
No one was injured in the attacks, according to presidential official Oleksiy Kuleba. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, 200,000 people are without electricity, he added. In and around the particularly vulnerable eastern Ukrainian city with over a million inhabitants near the Russian border, at least ten infrastructure facilities were attacked with rockets, Governor Oleh Synjehubow announced.
Ukrainian energy supplier DTEK said on Telegram that two of its thermal power stations had been attacked, without naming the locations.
Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko also reported attacks on power generation and distribution facilities in the Zaporizhia, Lviv and Kiev regions.
Air raid sirens in Kiev for hours
A fire broke out at a critical infrastructure facility in the vicinity of the capital Kiev. “Tonight the area was massively attacked with kamikaze drones and missiles,” Ruslan Kravchenko, administrative head of the Kiev region, wrote on Telegram. “The air raid siren lasted more than five hours.”
Dreaded hypersonic missiles
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia has deployed several of the feared Kinschal hypersonic missiles. Of the 40 attacking Iranian-made Shahed combat drones, 37 were intercepted. Ukraine has been fending off a large-scale Russian invasion for more than two years.
With air strikes deep in the Ukrainian hinterland, Moscow repeatedly tries to paralyze Ukraine’s energy supply. Zelenskiy once again emphasized that his country needed more air defense equipment.
