Following a major avalanche in Tyrol, a large-scale operation is currently underway in Vent with several mountain rescue teams, dog handlers and helicopters. According to initial reports, ten people may have been buried. One victim has already been excavated in critical condition.
According to initial information, the avalanche may have occurred around 11 a.m. in the municipality of Vent im Niedertal in the direction of Martin Busch Hütte. A road leads to this area. The avalanche probably broke out about halfway along the route at an altitude of about 2,200 meters and buried several people. The ten victims have now been confirmed. One person has now been excavated, likely in critical condition, and a further four have been detected using an LVS search. The search is still underway for the other ten victims.
Location confusing
The mountain rescue services Obergurgl, Sölden and Längenfeld, as well as dog handlers and several helicopters are currently in action. However, currently not all emergency services can reach the accident scene due to safety reasons. The Libelle Tirol undertook a visual flight with mountain rescuers from Sölden to better assess the situation.
“The meeting point for the mountain rescuers is currently Vent,” says the Sölden mountain rescue team. An avalanche explosion may need to be performed. Nothing is currently known about the exact number of people buried or their health status.
