The “Krone” reported on the fate of children in care who are released from state care at the age of 18 and left to fend for themselves. Politicians are now responding to this problem: the SPÖ, ÖVP and the Greens have decided in the Social Committee that the need for further care will increase after reaching the age of majority.
“All too often I hear that children who need help are put out on the street on their 18th birthday. We want to investigate where urgent improvements are still needed. No one should automatically have their safety net torn apart at the age of 18,” Green MP Barbara Neßler told “Krone”.
Young people need help
About 13,000 children and young people in Austria do not grow up at home. When making the transition from child and youth care to independence, affected young adults, also known as care leavers, often encounter problems: they need support to become independent.
Some young people request continued care after the age of 18, which can be provided voluntarily by the federal states. Since the nationalization of child and youth care, which was decided in 2018, there have been different requirements in the different federal states as to how long or how long such continuations should be allowed.
A study commissioned by the federal government now aims to accurately map the data surrounding the situation, create an overview of the life and problem situations of care leavers and provide a basis for taking a closer look at the problems that care leavers face and find solutions. that is what it says in the tripartite motion.
