US President Joe Biden on Friday called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and announced a new military aid package. Zelensky had previously said that there was no fighting on the front lines with words.
“On the front lines, we fight with grenades and equipment, not with words like ‘tomorrow’ or ‘soon,’” the Ukrainian president said in his evening video address. His country is still waiting for packages of weapons or equipment “that have been announced and decided but not yet delivered.” Zelensky did not provide details about the defaulting suppliers.
A few days ago, he had already called for the outstanding arms and ammunition packages to be delivered as soon as possible. War knows no holidays. Now, US President Joe Biden has announced a new aid package. According to the US presidential office, this includes anti-aircraft missiles, anti-drone equipment, anti-tank missiles and ammunition.
Biden: “Still a free country”
Biden reaffirmed the United States’ “unwavering support for the Ukrainian people,” Washington said. Despite the war, Ukraine “is still a free country.” When it ends, the country will be “free, sovereign, and independent.” “Russia will not win this conflict. “The independent Ukrainian people will prevail — and the United States, our allies, and our partners will stand with them every step of the way.”
Ukraine receives the bulk of its military aid from the US. The White House has pledged aid totaling over $55 billion (equivalent to €49.13 billion) since the start of the war. In addition, Britain, France and Germany are significant contributors to international military aid.
A fifth of the country occupied
Russian troops currently occupy almost a fifth of the country. Ukrainian troops are under pressure especially in the east; they have launched a counteroffensive in the western Russian region of Kursk.
