Law on course – mobilization: Ukraine makes recruitment easier

Date:

The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday adopted a controversial bill on the mobilization of the armed forces. The law, among other things, makes drafting easier and provides for higher penalties for conscientious objectors.

“The bill on mobilization has been adopted in its entirety,” deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak said on Thursday. 283 of the 450 MPs voted in favor, he added.

Deleted passage causes dissatisfaction
At the last minute, a passage providing for the discharge of soldiers from the army who had served 36 months was deleted. The cancellation caused dissatisfaction among many soldiers who have been fighting at the front for more than two years, and their families.

Digital system is introduced
The law is also intended to make the recruitment process easier by introducing a digital system. The law must be signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky before it comes into effect.

Huge losses in the Ukrainian army
After more than two years of war, the Ukrainian army is recording enormous losses. Ukraine is having difficulty recruiting additional soldiers. At the beginning of April, Ukraine lowered the age for conscription from 27 to 25.
