A civilian patrol of the German traffic police discovered 18 kilograms of gold in a car during a highway check in Bavaria. Officers temporarily detained the two occupants.
The Public Prosecution Service had the gold seized and started an investigation into suspected money laundering.
It was initially unclear how much the gold was worth
According to police, they were homemade gold bars without an embossed karat number, which indicates the gold content of the alloy in question. According to current prices on the legal gold market, 18 kilograms of the cheapest alloy with eight carats would be worth over 400,000 euros, pure gold with 24 carats over a million.
“Anomalies” on the vehicle led to the discovery
The incident happened on Good Friday, but was only now reported by the police. According to police information, the check took place on the A99 at the Aschheim/Ismaning junction northeast of Munich. Police first noticed unspecified “abnormalities” on the vehicle and eventually located the contraband hideout.
