Nearly 600 police officers have been dismissed for misconduct in Wales and England in a year. In the 12 months to March 2024, the number of redundancies rose by 50 percent to 593.
The College of Policing, a training organization for police forces in England and Wales, published the shocking figures on Tuesday. This includes 74 officers fired for sex offenses and misconduct.
Dishonesty is the most common reason for dismissal
In a further 18 cases the reason for dismissal was possession of images of the abuse of minors and in 71 cases discriminatory behaviour. According to the organization, dismissals due to dishonesty were the most common, with 125 cases.
It is “extremely disappointing to see that the behavior of a number of officers falls well below the standard that we have set (…) and that the public rightly expects,” said Tom Harding of the College of Policing.
Many scandals in the recent past
The British police have long been criticized for a number of scandals. As recently as February, a police officer was sentenced to life in prison for raping and sexually assaulting several women while abusing his official authority. The kidnapping, rape and murder of London’s Sarah Everard by a police officer in 2021 previously caused a stir.
