The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld an 1864 ban on abortion. This bans all abortions unless the life of the pregnant woman is in danger. Now a prayer group has attracted attention with a bizarre ritual in the Senate.
They prayed in an otherwise deserted room. According to US media reports, the incident took place on Monday, a day before the decision. As images show, people kneel over the state seal, make gestures and speak incomprehensible words. It is said to be a ritual called speaking in tongues that is popular in evangelical groups.
You can see a video of the incident here.
The senator prayed with us
The group was supported by Republican Senator Anthony Kern, who shouted, among other things, “Let it be, Father God.” Kern confirmed his participation and stated that he had prayed for the abortion ban of 1864. “It appears that our prayer team has stirred up some God haters,” he wrote on the X platform.
The reactions to the video on X are mainly negative. For example, users wonder why this is even allowed in a government building, or indicate that higher education would solve this problem.
More sterilizations since abortion bans
The nationwide right to abortion in the US (from 1973) was overturned in 2022. Since then, about 20 conservative states have abolished the law entirely or at least limited it.
According to a new study, significantly more sterilizations are now taking place than before, especially among women. One of the study’s authors, Jacqueline Ellison of the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, explains this with women’s greater responsibility to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
High costs, complex procedure
However, operations on women are significantly more complex and two to six times more expensive than on men. A complex procedure is also required to reverse the sterilization. The study focused on 18 to 30 year olds and used medical data from major centers and hospitals.
In Austria, the costs for a vasectomy can be up to 2,000 euros for women and up to 1,000 euros for men. The procedure is legally permitted from the age of 25. Abortions within the first three months are not punishable.
