The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine has now completely switched to cold mode. The management of the power plant announced on Saturday that no radioactivity was released during the procedure. The building had previously been shot several times.
The potentially largest nuclear power plant in Europe has a capacity of almost six gigawatts and was occupied by Russian troops shortly after the start of the war. It was later mined. The shelling increased international concerns about a nuclear accident. However, so far this has not happened. Both warring parties accuse each other of trying to provoke an incident.
Steam produced
Due to the danger, the power plant was shut down in September 2022. However, one block was still in the warm state several times. The reactor does not produce electricity, but steam, which was used to meet the needs of the plant. The cold condition is still considered the safest. In this condition the blocks are switched off at low pressure and cooled with cold water.
The recent work is said to have been carried out in accordance with operational standards.
Zelenskyy complains of a lack of support
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has complained about the lack of military support from the West. “Unfortunately, some of the support is waning and we must do everything we can to improve our own capabilities,” he said on Friday. The energy sector is a current problem area in the country. There are always power outages and people have to prepare for the next heating season.
