After the record loot of a Viennese widow, a pair of Turkish brothers were arrested. The Public Prosecution Service for Economic and Corruption (WKStA) is investigating the fake police officers.
Because the damage amounts to more than five million euros, the file, now running into hundreds of pages, falls under the responsibility of the WKStA, which is ubiquitous through investigations against ex-politicians such as former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.
Because behind the fake police officers lies a mafia gang of more than 30 suspects. The fraudsters are tightly organized and operate from Turkey. In Austria and across Europe, retirees are being tricked with shocking calls from call centers there. The potential victims are sometimes spied on in advance and the money or valuables are then collected by ‘collectors’.
Bosses live in luxury
The actual bosses therefore remain in the background and live in luxury. The godfather of this group is now said to be worth 500 million euros! Business is flourishing.
In the case of the Viennese academic widow, who handed over 1.5 million euros in cash, there were only two small fish in the net: a pair of Turkish brothers. One of the suspects still in custody (lawyer Manfred Arbacher-Stöger) would have been allowed to withhold only 20,000 euros as wages from the partial amount of 600,000 euros. His brother, represented by top lawyer Rudolf Mayer, is now free again.
The investigation against the fake police officers is still in full swing.
