The premiere of the ORF “Starnacht” in Mörbisch was not up to par. Because the storm cell that hit countless parts of Austria on Saturday forced the organizers of the live event on Lake Neusiedler See to stop. Moderator Alfons Haider emphasized that this was necessary “for security reasons”.
Pop singer Petra Frey was just entertaining the numerous guests when the torrential rains and strong gusts of wind started. As the visitors fled to their vehicles and fled to safe halls, the ORF showed the taped dress rehearsal of the “Star Night”. When the storm passed and all safety issues had been resolved, the live broadcast resumed shortly after 10 p.m.
Storm causes millions of damage
Several parts of Lower Austria and Burgenland were badly hit by storms on Saturday. According to the Austrian insurance company Hagle, agriculture had to accept damage of about 1.5 million euros. “The states of Lower Austria and again the south of Burgenland are affected. Heavy rainfall – in some areas up to 50 liters per square meter within half an hour – and hail damaged more than 7,500 hectares of farmland,” said hail insurance spokesman Mario Winkler.
Maximum temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius were accompanied by heavy rain and hail. The districts particularly affected were Zwettl and Gmünd in Lower Austria and Oberwart and Güssing in Burgenland.
In Vienna, too, there was an apocalyptic mood in some neighborhoods with stormy winds and rain. However, the storm calmed down relatively quickly. In some places, 17 liters per square meter of rain came together, the storm center reports (see tweet above).
