Twins Lori and George Schappell, who had been at the helm since their birth in 1961, have died in the US. They were believed to be the oldest living conjoined twin pair in the world. Despite their special situation, the two lived very different lives. They lived to be more than twice as old as the doctors had predicted.
According to Guinness World Records, Lori and George were the “oldest living conjoined twins and oldest female conjoined twins of all time.” Because George was born Dori and only decided to live as a man in 2007. According to Guinness World Records, this had never happened before.
Dating wasn’t a problem for conjoined twins
Lori and George were joined at the temple and shared 30 percent of their frontal lobes and major blood vessels – so separation was not possible. Despite these limitations, the two emphasized that they live normal – and separate – lives.
“We travel, clean our own apartment and Lori even had a boyfriend. Nothing stops us from doing what we want,” says George, describing her life. When Lori had appointments, George occupied himself with puzzles or books. He would have been so distracted that he could even ignore it when his sister kissed someone.
Their interests were also very different. George was a country singer who even performed in Japan and Germany. Lori, on the other hand, enjoyed bowling and won several trophies.
Each twin had their own room
“When we were born the doctors didn’t think we would live to be 30, but we proved them wrong,” Lori told The Sun in 2011. They lived in a two-bedroom apartment, where everyone had their own room. One night we slept in Lori’s room and the next night in George’s room.
The two would not have wanted a divorce even if that were possible. ‘Should we be separated? Not really. My theory is: why fix what isn’t broken?” George explained in a documentary about the special twins.
