Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has sent an “urgent letter” to the Council President, requesting a meeting and labeling the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization.
The UN Security Council will hold an extraordinary meeting this Sunday afternoon, at the request of Israel, to discuss the situation in the Middle East following the Iranian launch of dozens of drones against Israeli territory, the body’s current presidency has announced.
The announcement of the meeting comes after Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, sent an “urgent letter” to the Council president, asking for an emergency meeting and demanding condemnation of the Iranian attack on Israel , as well as the designation of the Iranian leader. Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
Erdan defended in the letter that “the time has come for the Security Council to take concrete measures against the Iranian threat,” claiming that it not only represents “a blatant violation of Israeli sovereignty” but also “the proper international violates law and Security Council Resolutions”.
“The Iranian attack is a serious threat to world peace and security and I hope that the Council will use all means to take concrete measures against Iran,” the Israeli ambassador added on the social network X.
Meloni calls the G7
The Italian presidency of the G7, in turn, convened a video conference this Sunday with the leaders of the world’s seven richest states to discuss the Iranian attack on Israel, official sources said.
The meeting convened by the government and chaired by Giogia Meloni will take place early in the afternoon, according to the same sources.
US President Joe Biden had announced this morning that he would request a meeting of the G7 to coordinate a diplomatic response, after guaranteeing his support for Israel and ensuring that US troops had contributed to stopping the attack by Iran.
