They are not exactly considered flight animals, but the broad-sided tortoise “Heidi” in Schönau im Mühlkreis managed to overcome a 60 centimeter high fence and escape. On Facebook, owner Franz Aumayer asks for help in the search. His post has been shared 315 times so far and even in Germany people are looking for the reptile.
“Heidi” had only come to the Mühlviertel from Vienna about a week ago and got along well with the other tortoises from Aumayer. The fact that she managed to get over the fence could be due to her ‘escape experience’. “She has already escaped a few times and that is why she has her previous owner’s telephone number on the tank,” says the animal lover.

But how far can a turtle go? “One of our Greek tortoises has escaped several times and even hibernated outside twice. The postman brought it back to us in May. “She was about two kilometers from home,” Aumayer smiles.
