More than 200 exotic animals have died in a fire at a zoo on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula, according to media reports. The fire was discovered too late.
The emergency call came in just after half past two in the morning. The fire area was over 600 square meters. “The main reason for the tragedy is the late discovery of the fire,” said a spokesperson for the local civil protection.
Five-storey building is on fire
When the fire brigade arrived, the entire five-story building housing the tropical zoo was already on fire. The wooden roof and straw in the fences allowed the fire to spread quickly.
The fire brigade was able to remove a woman from the burning building to safety. According to reports, two bears were also rescued.
Short circuit caused fire
However, most other animals, including crocodiles and chameleons, giant snakes and turtles, capybaras and capuchin monkeys, died in the smoke and flames. A short circuit is considered a possible cause of the fire.
