In Myanmar, former de facto head of government and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, 78, has been transferred from prison to house arrest, which is largely isolated internationally, according to the military junta. This was done to prevent heat stroke.
For this reason, other older prisoners were also transferred from prison to house arrest.
Suu Kyi in custody since military coup
“The extreme heat does not only affect Aung San Suu Kyi. We are working to protect everyone who needs to take necessary precautions, especially the elderly prisoners, from heatstroke,” military government spokesman Min Tun said. Suu Kyi has been in detention since the military coup more than three years ago.
The military in the Southeast Asian country seized power on February 1, 2021 under General Min Aung Hlaing and overthrew the democratically elected government. Thousands of people were arrested at the time and hundreds were killed by security forces.
Myanmar’s military justified the government’s ouster by claiming fraud in the November 2020 parliamentary elections, in which Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory. Suu Kyi, like other leading politicians, was detained at the time.
