A Pole is said to have helped Russian military intelligence plan an assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He is accused of collecting information about security measures at Rzeszow airport and passing it on to the Russians.
“This was intended, among other things, to help the Russian secret services plan a possible assassination attempt on a foreign head of state – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,” the Warsaw prosecutor’s office said. The tip is said to have come from the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office, which presented extensive evidence.
The investigators accuse the man of being “prepared to act for foreign secret services against Poland.” The man has now been arrested. If convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison.
Arrival and departure point for Western politicians
The heavily guarded airport is located about 90 kilometers from the Polish border with Ukraine. It not only plays a central role in arms deliveries, but is also the arrival and departure point for all Western politicians who want to travel to Kiev. Zelensky and other top Ukrainian politicians also use the airport to travel west.
The night train is used to travel to and from Kiev, because the airspace above Ukraine is closed. The Polish government is a key ally of Ukraine and a hub for Western military aid to the warring country.
