The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox worldwide has risen to 780. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Sunday that counts were only made in those 27 countries where the virus would not otherwise circulate. The global risk of the disease remains “moderate”.
Most cases (688) from May 13 to June 2 reported European countries. According to the WHO, mainly, but not exclusively, men who have sex with men are affected. If the virus manages to become a “common human pathogen in non-endemic countries”, it could pose a “high risk to public health”. A day ago there were 21 affected countries and more than 700 cases.
Less serious illness
Monkeypox is considered a less serious disease compared to smallpox, which was eradicated in 1980. The pathogen is mainly transmitted through close person-to-person contact. According to the WHO, symptoms such as fever and skin rash with crusting disappear on their own within a few weeks. However, some people can experience medical complications and in rare cases monkey pox can be fatal.
There are no deaths in the recently recorded cases in western countries. However, in 2022, 66 people died from monkey pox in five African countries.
