Dog poop attack – ballet director is back at the Hannover Opera

Date:

After the dog feces attack on a journalist, former ballet director Marco Goecke is back at his old workplace. He will be one of the choreographers of a three-part ballet evening, the Hanover State Opera announced.

It is scheduled to premiere on June 6, 2025. The new season will focus on topics of community and peaceful interaction with each other, it was said.

Marco Goecke became famous outside the dance scene thanks to a dog feces attack on a journalist. The incident took place in February 2023 in the foyer of the Hannover State Opera. He had accused an editor of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” of always writing “bad, personal” reviews. He then smeared it with dog poop from his four-legged friend, which he said he just wanted to get rid of.

Suspension and ban on the premises
After the incident, Goecke was immediately suspended and banned from the building. His contract as ballet director in Hannover was terminated and the proceedings against a fine were dropped. The police investigated assault and insults.

He himself stated that he regretted the incident and that he had acted emotionally. The German is an award-winning choreographer who has worked on many ballet stages at home and abroad.

A few months ago it was said that the Hannover State Opera would consider working with the ballet director again. The Lower Saxony Minister of Culture, Falko Mohrs (SPD), described it at the time as “unacceptable” that Goecke would ever set foot in the opera house again (see video above).
