At the EU’s external border with Turkey, Bulgarian customs officials seized around 400 kilos of heroin from Iran in a Turkish truck. The drugs worth around 8.5 million euros were hidden in 156 mattresses.
As the main customs office in Sofia announced on Saturday, the heroin was destined for an EU country. The discovery was made last Wednesday during a customs check at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing. The drugs were hidden in 618 packages in 156 mattresses.
The 63-year-old Turkish driver of the truck was arrested. According to the information, he faces a prison sentence of up to twenty years.
Only in March did Bulgarian customs officials discover approximately 170 kilos of cocaine under bananas from Ecuador in the port of Burgas on the Black Sea. The ship with the bananas is said to have come to Bulgaria from Ecuador via Panama, Malta and Italy.
