Iran is reportedly in contact with the US to resume negotiations over the mullahs’ regime’s nuclear program. Under the headline “Saving the deal amid a war crisis,” Shargh daily reported on Sunday, citing informed sources, that Iran’s UN mission in New York was coordinating the talks.
There is no official confirmation yet. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian admitted on Saturday that discussions about the nuclear deal also took place during his stay in New York. However, he did not provide further details, including whether or not the talks took place with US officials. However, he said Iran was interested in a “diplomatic solution” to the conflicts in the Middle East.
Military conflict with Israel as a means of pressure?
From the perspective of commentators, the leadership in Tehran wants to use the recent military conflict with arch-enemy Israel as leverage to revive the 2015 Vienna nuclear deal. Accordingly, new nuclear negotiations must take place in exchange for the de-escalation demanded by the West. Their goal is to lift the sanctions that are crippling Iran. The planned visit to Tehran by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, is also seen in the same context.
Things went downhill after the US withdrew from the nuclear deal
After the 2015 Vienna nuclear deal and the lifting of sanctions, Iran’s ailing economy briefly recovered. Oil exports in particular, the country’s main source of income, were relatively normal again. But since the US withdrew from the deal in 2018 – then under President Donald Trump – and imposed new sanctions, the de facto oil-rich country is in the worst financial crisis in its history. The national currency, the rial, has since lost more than 60 percent of its value.
