A Russian general has been killed in eastern Ukraine, according to a journalist for Russian state television. Exactly when and where Major General Roman Kutuzov died has not been disclosed.
Social media reported that the commander of the First Army in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic had been fatally wounded near Bakhmut. Former Ukrainian ambassador to Vienna, Olexander Scherba, wrote on Twitter: “The murder of Kutuzov sounds like something big to those who know Russian history.” At the time Scherba wrote these lines, Scherba probably had Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov-Smolensky, an ancestor of the now-fallen general, in mind. Kutuzov-Smolensky is considered a great hero in the war against Napoleon’s troops in the war of 1812-1814.
There is no comment from the Russian Defense Ministry. Russia generally keeps the deaths of members of its armed forces a secret. Most recently, on March 25, Russia stated that 1,351 Russian soldiers had been killed since the start of the war in Ukraine, officially known as “special operations,” on February 24.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to his office, visited troops at the front in the Zaporizhzhya region. He thanked the armed forces for their efforts and protection of the population and the state and thought of the fallen soldiers.
Ukrainian counter-offensive
The Ukrainian army has recaptured half of the disputed city of Sieverodonetsk in the east of the country, according to the regional administration. Armed forces had “cleaned” half of the industrial city of Russian troops, Ukraine’s governor of the Luhansk region, Serhiy Gajdaj, said Sunday. However, a larger Russian counterattack is expected in the coming days.
Sieverodonetsk is the last major city in the Luhansk region that Russia has not yet conquered. The stated goal of the Russian armed forces is to take over the entire Donbass region, which includes the Donetsk region. Parts of the Donbass have been controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014.
