In the Czech city of Liberec, 18 people, including nine children, were injured in a lightning strike. The majority of those affected were found unconscious on the ground, including young people between the ages of two and sixteen. None of the patients suffered burns and none required surgery.
The accident took place during a children’s party in the castle park in the Vratislavice nad Nisou district. Five people were resuscitated by emergency services. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. A rescue helicopter flew a child to Motol University Hospital in Prague.
Children had sought shelter under the trees
“Lightning struck a tree during the rain and storm,” a police spokeswoman said, according to the CTK office. Numerous people are said to have stood under this tree to seek shelter from the rain. In the Czech Republic, International Children’s Day is traditionally celebrated at the beginning of June.
Floods and storms keep the Czech Republic in suspense
Storms with heavy rain also caused problems elsewhere. Many rivers in the west of the Czech Republic were flooded. In the industrial and beer city of Pilsen, the city council asked people to stay away from the banks.
“The water has enormous power,” Mayor Roman Zarzycky warned on social media. The railway line between Pilsen (Plzen) and Strakonice in the south-west of the country had to be closed due to landslides. The state weather service CHMU expected more storms Monday afternoon. The situation is also tense in Germany (see link to article above).
