The Netherlands is now the center of ATM bombers. Dutch perpetrators blew up eight ATMs here in 2023; in Germany it was a coup every day.
It was only late last year that Dutch ‘explosion masters’ at Raiffeisen banks in Lower Austria and Upper Austria made headlines. The new ATM mafia consists of more than 500 members (mainly young men with migrant roots) and has its headquarters in the Dutch city of Utrecht. Every night, teams leave from there on raids through Europe.
Always in the early morning hours between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., residents are woken from their sleep by a huge bang.
No respect for human life
The perpetrators have no respect for human life in their series of crimes. They engage in daring chases with stolen cars; the explosions are sometimes so powerful that half the bank next to the ATM is blown up. Debris often flies tens of meters!
In the home country of professional criminals, banking measures against these types of robberies have now been very successful. Captured banknotes are unusable because they automatically stick together after the explosion. After the record year of 442 explosions by Dutch perpetrators in Germany in 2022, there were still 367 crimes last year – so a coup is committed every day.
While our neighbors are now starting proceedings against 16 Dutch people who stole seven million euros from 90 ATMs, several suspects have also been arrested in Austria.
