Nowhere in Europe are there as many speed checks as in Italy, more than 11,000. And they also diligently point out road users who drive too fast. But now countless sentences could be lifted again.
The Supreme Court in Rome recently upheld the appeal of a lawyer from Treviso who drove 97 instead of 90 km/h. According to the court, most speed cameras have been approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure, but have not undergone the necessary detailed technical tests by the government.
In doing so, the judges may be setting a precedent. In this specific case it involved radar boxes of the ‘Red & Speed Evo L2’ type, many of which can be found on Italian roads.
Photo proof will no longer be sent
Italian dishes are always on radar boxes. After many complaints about invasion of privacy, speed camera photos are no longer sent with the fine notices. The evidence remains with the authorities and will not be released until an objection is raised.
The reason for the complaints: The recordings also showed other people who perhaps should not have been in the car – which is why many marriages would have broken down.
