Eastern Taiwan has again been shaken by heavy tremors. According to the responsible weather authority, the earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.3 and 6.0 occurred early Tuesday (local time). The tremors were also clearly felt in the Taiwanese capital Taipei.
Authorities recorded a series of earthquakes on Monday, the strongest of which measured 5.9. Initially there were no reports of injuries or damage. However, the fire brigade said it had observed two vacant buildings that were damaged during the major earthquake early this month and have now tilted.
Deaths after earthquake a few days ago
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake on April 3 killed at least 17 people. It was the worst earthquake in Taiwan in a quarter century. Numerous buildings in Hualien city were damaged and the earthquake caused landslides in the surrounding mountains that blocked several roads.
Earthquakes are not uncommon
Earthquakes are common in Taiwan because two tectonic plates collide near the island. Strict building regulations apply. In 1999, about 2,400 people died in the most devastating earthquake in Taiwan’s history.
