Provide structure – California: iconic Oceanside Pier in flames

Date:

A vacant restaurant at the end of Southern California’s iconic Oceanside Pier caught fire Thursday. Smoke rose into the air and reached the beach as firefighters battled the flames from boats.

The pier in Oceanside, about 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of San Diego, extends over 1,900 feet (596 meters) and offers visitors the opportunity to take a stroll across the ocean.

Flames in an empty restaurant
“The Oceanside Fire Department is currently battling a fire at the Oceanside Pier. We ask all citizens to stay away from the immediate area,” the authority reported on the short message service X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday afternoon.

The flames broke out in an empty restaurant at the end of the pier, they said. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

It had to be rebuilt five times
Historic wooden piers can be found all along the California coast. Many have been hit by violent storms in recent years, some requiring expensive repairs. The Oceanside Pier is considered one of the most iconic piers in Southern California.

With a length of 596 meters, it is also the longest wooden pier on the American west coast. After being destroyed several times, the pier had to be rebuilt five times. It has existed in its current form since 1925, the wooden part since 1988.
