No Rest – Nine dead in US shootings

Date:

Nine people were killed in shootings in three US cities over the weekend. 24 other people were injured. It wasn’t until Thursday that US President Joe Biden asked Congress to ban assault rifles and expand control after several firearms incidents.

There seems to be no end to shootings in the US. Nine people were killed and 26 others injured in shootings last weekend after incidents in Texas, Iowa and Philadelphia.

The latest shooting happened early Sunday morning in Saginaw, Michigan. Three people have been killed and 14 injured, according to WEYI. There were two more incidents on Saturday night. In a crowded bar and restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, two men got into an argument, after which they shot and killed three people. Twelve were injured. Police say the hail of bullets caused panic.

The shooting allegedly took place near a bar in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Three people were killed and 14 injured. Alithia Haven Ramirez, who died when she was only ten years old, was also buried the same weekend. She was one of 19 schoolchildren killed in the shooting of an 18-year-old in Uvalde with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. Her obituary states that she liked to play football and later wanted to go to an art academy in Paris.

Debate on gun laws
According to the non-governmental organization Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 240 shootings this year, in which four or more people have been injured or killed. Repeated murders involving firearms have fueled the debate over gun laws in the United States. US President Joe Biden on Thursday asked Congress to ban assault rifles, expand controls and take other gun control measures. Democratic US Senator Chris Murphy sees opportunities for a legislative package that also includes investments in mental health and school safety.
