The high temperatures in early April were underestimated by a man from Salzburg; he left his dog in the back of his pickup while he went grocery shopping. Serious consequences – because the animal had no chance and died of pain in a closed transport box made of black metal. The fact that the man is a hunter and an officer in the armed forces makes animal rights activists sit up.
All help came too late for the three-year-old mountain dog “Waldmann”. He lost his young life due to the gross carelessness of his master, who should have known better. His negligence has now earned him a charge of animal cruelty.
But that’s not all, because information was leaked to the “Krone” which assumed that the man from Salzburg had pure intentions. He is said to have treated his dog sadistically even as a puppy, starving him and freezing him. Keeping it in the box in the heat has also brought the animal to the brink of heat stroke several times, according to a source who wished to remain anonymous.
Serious accusations that the animal corner “Krone” must investigate. During the conversation, the affected person appears sheepish and blames himself: “There is no excuse for my dog dying in the car. This guilt will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
word against word
However, he does not want to be labeled a serial animal torturer and sees the accusations as an act of revenge. This is not the first time attempts have been made to harm him. Since leaving political office, the father has seen his entire family at the mercy of a smear campaign. There is no evidence of this from either side.
Irresponsible
What remains is the first official victim of the heat season. This year, small children and animals will once again suffer hellish torments in locked cars, for some with fatal consequences as in “Waldmann”.
Half of patients do not survive heat stroke
First dogs pant and bark, then they literally fight for survival. If the animal does not receive help quickly, there is a risk of irreparable organ damage or even death. Fatal: Even if the surviving animal is supposedly rescued from the vehicle in a timely manner and immediate veterinary treatment is given, approximately half of patients do not survive heat stroke. Death can occur up to 24 hours after the incident.
Lulled into a false sense of security
Even if the windows are left open just a little, the air circulation in the car is too low to provide cooling. Even shaded parking spaces do not protect against overheating. And as Indra Schöneich-Kley of the Vienna Ombudsman for Animal Welfare (TOW) makes clear: “Even in parking garages, the temperature inside quickly reaches threatening levels.”
All this information is spread every year through all media, and yet such cases continue to occur. “It is incomprehensible to me that you, as a hunter, acted so thoughtlessly. You are responsible for your animal and because of your job in the army you act as a role model in society!” Tierecke warns Lady Maggie Entenfellner in a telephone conversation with the Salzburger.
