The Israeli government will open a new border crossing into the northern part of the Gaza Strip this week. The White House announced this. Currently 200 trucks cross the border per day, but 500 are needed.
This is based on a UN estimate. According to the White House, US President Joe Biden called for a new border crossing to the Gaza Strip in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Moreover, the US government said it was not confident that Israel could soon reach a ceasefire deal with the Islamist Hamas. “(…) I would say we are very pragmatic about this,” said John Kirby of the National Security Council. There is a “very good proposal” on the table and Hamas should accept it (see video above).
Debate on a six-week ceasefire
This is a six-week ceasefire; “Time is of the essence, but I can’t put a deadline on this,” Kirby said. “Hope waxes and wanes, and (…) we’ll just keep pushing and see if we can do it.”
Indirect negotiations are currently underway in Cairo on a new agreement for a ceasefire in the war and the release of more hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
