Accident in Peru – Bus falls into 200 meter deep gorge: 25 dead

Date:

At least 25 people have been killed in a bus accident in northern Peru. The bus fell into a ravine about 200 meters deep in the Andean region of Cajamarca, authorities said on Monday (local time).

There were also 13 injured, Celendín city police chief Hugo Uriate said. The accident took place on Monday night on a high plateau in the Andes, about 850 kilometers north of the capital Lima.

The bus carrying more than 50 passengers was traveling on an accident-prone, potholed dirt road when it fell into the ravine, prosecutor Olga Bobadilla told radio station RPP. He came to rest on the bank of a river. Several passengers were apparently washed away by the water, authority spokesman Jaime Herrera said.

Rescuers and firefighters rescued the victims and took the injured to hospital. Dozens of desperate relatives gathered at the nearby police station, waiting for news of the fate of the bus passengers. Celendín authorities have declared two days of mourning.

Nearly 3,100 road deaths last year
Road accidents are common in Peru due to excessive speed, poor roads, lack of road signs and irregular traffic controls. Last year, the Latin American country registered more than 3,100 road deaths.
