A lane on a highway collapsed in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong early Wednesday morning. 24 people were killed. Another 30 require treatment in hospitals. It has rained a lot in the province in recent days and the streams have risen.
According to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, twenty vehicles crashed. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise and seeing a hole open behind them. A roadway partially collapsed and was torn away. The destroyed area is on a slope, which probably made the terrain unstable.
The collapsed road section was approximately 18 meters long and had an area of approximately 184 square meters. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. About 500 firefighters, police and other authorities carried out the rescue efforts.
Floods in cities and towns
Guangdong province is used to heavy rainfall, but it is currently unusually heavy. Many rivers rose menacingly and flooding was reported in cities and towns north and south of Guangzhou.
Landslides are also considered particularly dangerous in the mountainous regions of China during heavy rainfall. At the end of January, more than thirty people were killed in a landslide in a village in the southwest of the country. Every year, several hundred people die in China due to severe storms, floods and other natural disasters.
